Yes, it’s very dark. The full size one at Flickr shows up better.
I was shocked when I got the email from Johannes1977, the Windlight Magazine publisher. I thought I might have a chance at third place or honorable mention; there were several other photographers who chose that tomb as their subject or as backdrop to a fashion shot. But that was the first one I posted, and of the two I took, it was the one that had a particular glint on the hanging golden skulls and the glowing snake eyes, because I shot using a Windlight setting for an SL day (not fixed day) and the sun was setting. That was the one, and did not even crop it or alter it in any way.
First, because it’s WINDLIGHT, and although the use of filters during shooting, and post-processing was allowed, I was pleased by that particular, ephemeral effect. Second, I could have cropped it but in the end decided against that and posted it unedited and uncropped. Apparently, my comment to that effect impressed the judges, according to what Johannes (and also Gabi) said. They were both VERY complimentary and I was blushing a lot. Yikes.
Which makes THIS particularly funny:

I, uh, may have been a little too enthusiastic when posting public relations announcements as a favor for the St John sim owner, Gabrielle Riel. I sent an apology to the Second Life Official group admin but have yet to hear back.
Meanwhile the St John floats are rolling, although there were extremely frustrating tech problems at first. It didn’t help that there were a sim full of us listening to music and dancing while Gabi and Eve Whiterose sorted it out. Earlier in the day, she was forced to close the sim for a few hours while dealing with that and other stuff.
I took a lot of pictures at both Flickr and my SL profile. I also danced, and at one point may have accidentally clicked on something on my float that made it leap forward just as Gabi was working on fixing it. So I ran and hid under the cakes table.
Fortunately, I was very small. I stayed quiet and licked frosting off my paws when I thought nobody was looking.

Two other Dinkies kitties from St John showed up and D’OH, we all bought the same outfit; AlisonLockheart and cupcakesnatcher danced along with me. Later, I sent a snapshot to the maker of the outfit, Clover Dezno.
Then later, when all the floats were out and rolling, I spotted a new one that looked somewhat familiar.
Yes, it’s the Tomb of the Wulfenbachs, from my old Steelhead acquaintance Baron KlausWulfenbach Outlander. The detail on the top of his famous airship was remarkable. There are 3 dancing poses. It was nice seeing the Baron when he showed up later (which fortunately was after Edward Pearse left; they were wearing the same Baron Samedi outfit, which would have been awkwerrrrrd).
Anyway, when you look inside the tomb, you see an image of the Baron and Baronin. That tomb does get around – in fact, it’s driving itself around St John right now until Wednesday. The Baronin is wearing a snake instead of letting it crawl around on the ground as shown in my (modest cough) award-winning photo.
Which REALLY made me laugh, because on my float, I ALSO inserted myself into art.

There’s a story behind this. A few weeks ago, I attended an art exhibition in Second Life, supporting a friend’s DJ set. It was in an historic roleplay sim popular with Europeans, full of beautiful buildings with elegant decor (and at least one very high-fashion attendee). The featured artist asked me if I liked any of her pieces, which were all pictures of her in costume using some other well-known artist’s work as a backdrop. I did like one in particular, and said so.
She said “Good. That will be $L400, please.”
It might have been more, I can’t remember.
Not wishing to look like a piker (and a culturally deficient American) in front of my friend, I paid up, and mentioned that I also made products with artistic textures (the mesh screens). I did like her work, you see, and it was not an exorbitant amount. It was just a strong-armory amount.
“Oh, show me one, I will put the texture for the art piece on it for you.” That seemed like a better deal, so at first I passed one to her that was mod, no transfer as they normally are. She liked what it did and I think she ended up buying more kits from the maker, but then she said “Pass me a mod one that I can transfer back to you.”
Okay, lady, here you go… and she passes it back to me with her art texture on it, and it’s no mod, no copy. My object is now no mod, no copy. I probably handed it to her as no copy to prevent it from getting out full perm and protect the original maker, so I’m hoist on an artistic petard of my own making, I guess.
What a good joke on somebody (probably me). So that’s why inserting myself into art at the last minute to decorate my rather dull float made me laugh, and the Baron’s tomb made me laugh, too.

I’ve spent the weekend working on stuff, making headway and then hitting the wall (and occasionally screaming in frustration). Over the weekend, I worked for a long time on a “shell” shirt based on the Avastar addon, using an imported shape from my Open Sim standalone.

Don’t be too impressed. This is the “triangulated” version, I still have a version kept back that’s got regular quads and a mirror modifier. This is the “retopo” I did over the top of the rigged shell T-shirt, which is just a skintight version of the Avastar character model.
It was a lot of screaming and frustration, as I could not get something called “bsurfaces” to work in Blender. There have been changes in the last couple of updates and the version as shown in this video is no longer the same – there’s no panel to add something called “follows and crosses.”
I also read this – an even older version of Blender, but at least it’s text based. SPO Curriculum – Bsurfaces in Blender
Eventually, I just figured out how to snap a plane to the surface, turn on X-ray, and I started at the collar and worked down.

It LOOKS good, and I managed to produce a couple of different UV maps, the second one edited by hand to sort of follow the Second Life standard clothing template. But it’s crap. It looks better with the “retopo” UV map, but then that one won’t take standard SL clothing textures. It was sort of cute with a “student” shirt on it. I had to do something to delete the rigging, otherwise I couldn’t do the mirror modify, so it’ll have to be re-rigged once I can get it to even upload. I also probably need to do some low LOD models. Grr.
I thought I was doing well, but there are problems – loose unconnected mesh. I can’t upload it to Second Life or Opensim, and forget about rigging it. I think it’s best to start over.

I spent hours moving verts (vertices) by hand on Saturday and learned more than I wanted to know about some other methods to make the UV map sit right, but then this weird thing started happening. Some of the vertices were “connected” or welded to each other and they kept moving IN THE UV MAP even after being pinned. No pictures on that.
The screaming. It was very loud.
I mentioned it on G+ and the endlessly patient +Chic Aeon thought it might be the “keep UV and edit mesh selection in sync” button still being ticked, which it was, and so was I. But I’m a n00b and this is my time to make n00b errors.
This Bike Jersey project will have to be reworked – fortunately I kept a separate .blend file with the original quad version and the mirror modifier. The back topography was a mess and so I fooled around with it for a little while.

This is sort of goofy but it’s better than it was. I probably have too many faces over the tops of the sleeves and need to adjust them for better deforming under animation. I removed a couple of poles, used the K-knife tool to cut a new edge to reduce stretching down the middle of the back, but I don’t know, is this useable, or is it still messed up in the back? I may go back and cut an edge into that one wide faceloop up from the scapula, next to the 5-pole. I have many 5-poles but managed to take 2 or three out and straighten some of the area under and over the arm and collar.

The front looks okay, but there are issues with the join at the shoulder, and the edges should be less vertical over the shoulder and angle toward the armpit more. I figured out that “GG” is the G-grab tool for “grab edge and slide” so that was a good trick. I don’t know if I need more curves around the bust and “6-pack” area, probably would deform better if I moved some of the edges on the side to relax into where the body bends.
Meanwhile the AO bake still won’t work. WHAT?? am I doing wrong? Those damn black triangles! It’s probably to do with my settings, which are screwed up. I need a clear list of things to leave checked and unchecked and settings to set and not change.
I can’t even get that to save out. No pictures.
I also had issues with my new base top hat, to replace a an old sculpty I bought in a kit. ALL my top hats will eventually be switched over to the mesh (mess) base.

What the HELL did I do wrong? there are the dreaded black triangles. That’s when I went on a “vert hunt” to track down broken edges, double vertices, and general nastiness.
Meanwhile, I found some issues – a “stutter” edge under the hatband section where my hand had shaken a bit and the whole edge had looped back on itself. I’ve done that before and knew to look for it, and also there are these WEIRD “folded” faces up on the corners of the top, where I had done a “grid fill” in order to get around the problem of having a single pole with 16 or 32 edges.

The folded faces are hard to see except from a side angle.

No matter how I adjust the verts or try flipping normals (AKA “those FLIPPING NORMALS”) the faces remain folded. At one point I found a duplicate face (probably another errant mouse squiggle) and cleaned that out, but can’t find the same thing happening here even in wireframe.

But otherwise the mesh now looks clean, I’m not seeing any more stutters and there don’t appear to be any places where faces from the underside of the brim touch or poke through the upper brim faces.

I found this mesh analysis thing to check, which was somewhat interesting as far as displaying the edges.

And there’s detail on the inside of this one, because it’ll be a relatively high poly display version. It may get used in the St John Parish “always marching” Mardi Gras parade.
For actual use I would probably delete some of the inner faces. I deleted most of them for the mesh fedora, but test-victims said they could see the inside was invisible when they rezzed it out. So when I left the inner faces and uploaded to the Beta Grid, it came back with 9LI, higher than I wanted. That grid fill on the outer and inner top is probably the culprit, but it takes textures well. I could probably go with a different grid fill that’s all quads, though.
I have some updating to do on current products:

My friend DJ Pb Recreant has a regular gig playing tunes at the Blue Booby Bar in Escanes, mostly for members of the Cafe Wellstone politics and news chat group. He always has a pretty eclectic mix and takes requests.
On a whim I sent copies of the new St Patrick’s Day mesh vest for men that I put together from a kit to him and some of the other Cafe Wellstone guys, after he sent out a group message announcing the gig. Very kindly he sent back this screencap showing off the vest! That was really nice of him.
So of course I wrapped up the stuff I was doing and headed over to relax and listen to some not-quite-Irish remixes and interesting cuts of Celtic goodness.
It was a fun evening, always is as the Blue Booby Bar, whose motto is “My Eyes Are Up Here!”
What’s the one thing Linden Lab could do that would have the biggest impact on further improving your Second Life experience?
Many Second Life users have thoughts on this – from different approaches for the way things are done today, to brand new features that could dramatically improve their experiences, to seemingly small things that could have a big impact. Today, we’re launching an easier way to share your ideas with us, a new “Feedback & Suggestions†page on SecondLife.com. You can also find this page by going to Help and finding New Feature Suggestions in the drop down.
via A New Way to Share Your Suggestions for Second Lif… – Second Life.
I admit, I haven’t been very active lately, and haven’t been logging in. Yet I stay more or less current by reading blogs, Twitter feeds, and checking in on Facebook with Second Life friends (including some Steelhead denizens).
However, my mailboxen get totally crammed full of group notices, marketing notices, and stuff that I pretty much delete en masse. I’d like to stay current and maybe hear about a new class I could take (classes are always a good way for me to get recharged about things like building, creating, and trying something new).
Indigo Mertel recently blogged about some suggestions she would like that are specific to groups, and then she added a few more. She is founder of the East River Community, so improvements to group communication are clearly her motivation.
My motivations are less lofty; I just want to remove all the excess chaff from my (multiple) inboxes.

I’ve submitted my suggestion, but of course there’s no upvote capability so I’d apprecate if readers could also add a similar suggestion if they find the idea helpful! Let’s reduce the crap from our inboxen and free ourselves from the tyranny of email!
St Helens Dry Goods – We’ve Got You Covered!

Here’s a variety of hats with lots of different texture options. Some of these are available sized and rotated for Dinkies kitty avatars and classic Tinies, but should all be modifiable.
The Chameleonic hats have texture switcher scripts for the hat bands and bodies, and most of them also have a resizer in the root prim. Just touch the band or body to get a texture menu.

Hey! I got some press! Whaddya know!

The third shop on Steelhead is the dry goods shop found at Settlement 601 – St Helens Dry Goods Frontier Supplies, Steelhead St Helens (68, 156, 38). St. Helens Dry Goods is Shop #117 in the Hunt. They offer a very good cup of expresso to visitors, which I enjoyed while I looked around.
They have all the items you might expect in a dry goods store, including a little furniture, some lamps, a variety of hats, and even gentlemen’s walking sticks. Plan to spend a few minutes looking around this quaint shop.
via SL Newser – Fashion: Steelhead Shops Participate in Steam IX Hunt
Aw, that’s a very nice article. The other Steelhead shops in STEAM IX are Lumi’s shop Luminous Designs [Steelhead St Helens (214, 33, 37)] and Searra Weatherwax’s shop SparkWorks [Steelhead (149, 224, 25)]
Hurray for STEAM IX, and hurray for Steelhead, says I. My hunt item isn’t hard to find… this time around I get a list of visitors (and hurray for that).
Stop by my shop, click on the big STEAM IX sign to the left of the door, and get started on the hunt – it ends March 31.
It’s been a week or so since Ebbe Altberg was announced as the new CEO of Second Life, and I’ve seen quite a few suggestions for him.
First, there’s Inara Pey’s very useful short profile – and Altberg himself shows up in the comments.
Ciaran Laval notes that Altberg starts off well enough, with an informal official blog post and stopping by to comment on SL resident blogs, but wonders if Ebbe needs moar orc.
Jo Yardley of 1920’s Berlin even had a chance to talk with him, so she solicited questions in “What you want to ask Ebbe Altberg, new CEO of Linden Lab?”
Daniel Voyager summarized the recent meeting with SL journalists, and notes that a transcript is available, and that Draxtor Despres recorded it also.
From reading up on Ebbe Altberg’s bio (now that he’s Ebbe Linden) it’s clear that he was actually around during the early beta test, and his son was very active.
Daniel Voyager summarized the meet-and-greet with SL journalists, and also noted that Draxtor Despres recorded the session, and that a transcript is available.
He’s even posted to the official community forum, though how long that will last is doubtful:
I don’t really consider myself a ‘gamer,’ but I also don’t think that ‘game’ would describe Second Life either, and I’ve found Second Life intriguing for a long time. In addition to having personally explored the virtual world a bit back when it first started (of course I’m diving in more now), my son was a very active Resident as a teenager, and I’ve been consistently impressed by the incredible things the Second Life community creates. I’m proud to be joining the team that enables this level of creativity, and as I said in our press release, I’m committed to supporting our customers to help you become even more successful.
My suggestion: he should ask his friends and family members who DON’T have any previous SL experience to sign up for new accounts, and report their “brand new user experiences” back to him. He needs to know how difficult it is to sign up on your own, and how freshly minted new residents often get dumped into random hub areas where they’re easily targeted by griefers and people of bad intent (ie., people waiting to “befriend” new people into doing things they maybe shouldn’t, like working in a strip club or accepting virtual enslavement).
Many have cited the need for a Mentors program again, and I’ll continue to bang the drum for the Community Gateways concept that was so successful, yet was abandoned by SL. I still say that hands down, Caledon Oxbridge University is one of the best places a new person can start, because it’s designed to teach you as you learn to walk, and there are helpful people hanging about (and classes are actually in session along the path a newly rezzed person follows). If you follow this SLUrl link and sign up as a new person, you will still rez at their orientation point, just as you would when the Community Gateway program was in full swing.
Besides my suggestion, my question, should I ever encounter Ebbe, is “if you had stayed inworld after the beta test, would you still be a landowner, or would you have given up in disgust over tier, the homestead debacle, or something else?”
I’d been wearing a resized version of the velvet hat with my DINKIES kitty avatar and having so much fun, I had to put it out there for other Dinkies to enjoy.
Also, check out my “Chameleonic Possessions” group on Flickr – I’ll upload preview images of products I’m working on there, and also the best images of some of my existing products. I’m hoping that if people join it they’ll upload photos of themselves having fun with the stuffs.

I even added an arty style photo.

Now DINKIES Kitties can has a texture change top hat!
The textures on this versatile antique hat for year-round style. Add your own if you like! Just be careful to edit linked prims, and add textures to the contents of the hat body or band only.
Sized and rotated for Etheria Parrot’s DINKIES kitty avatars, will fit tinies too with some adjustment.
