This Italian fashion house Loblaco thinks trying on virtual clothes will drive sales of physical clothes, and virtual shows could save on costs of attending physical events. Have they SEEN what a scrimmage a big #SecondLife sales event is?

NAKED BODIES EVERYWHERE, ATTACHED TO INVISIBLE HANDS!

I went to the big #LeLutka holiday event yesterday, my first day back #inworld after a two-year hiatus.

For some reason, specially animated heads and virtual bodies are mix-n-match in #SecondLife. I barely have a mesh body, usually go with a system avatar. But I picked up a free, high quality mesh head at the event, and there was a list of stores that were also offering high-quality virtual fashion, so I’ll do some upgrading.

But the short time here spent using Mastodon reminded me of how open source can be a way to freedom from corporate control of our entertainment and shopping choices – so I’m sticking with the open source mesh avatar, Ruth Too v3.

While checking the list of participating shops, the very first one had cute, modern stuff that didn’t look right on the system avatar, but mesh bodies have “alpha cuts” so that your body parts are invisible and don’t “poke through” mesh clothes.

I fiddled with HUDs and cuts and got it looking better… can’t imagine actual famous people messing with it. Guess they’ll need virtual fashion assistants, which could be a serious job for many #SecondLifeResident #Fashionistas

But it won’t work for #Meta #Metaverse avatars, those dudes and dudettes don’t even have legs. And I’d like to see the physical fashion houses deal with #VRChat #Furry body types – they could make money selling nice outfits and accessories, but will they?

Meanwhile, my old photo skillz need sharpening. Just about the worst camera angle…right up my snoot and booty. Oh well.

I went back later and tried to figure out how to use a store credit for another #virtualoutfit at a different store, LOL, no. But I found another new French designer whose work really looked like fashion (and she had a beautiful treadle sewing machine set for sale, bought that too). Relevant to my #RealLife sewing interests, I’ll be back.

That second #virtualfashion event is called #ShopAndHop in #SecondLife – I’m going back in. Cover me! I don’t know if I’ll get through that list of shops, because the first two were so full of interesting things.

Yes, it’s very dark. The full size one at Flickr shows up better.

I was shocked when I got the email from Johannes1977, the Windlight Magazine publisher. I thought I might have a chance at third place or honorable mention; there were several other photographers who chose that tomb as their subject or as backdrop to a fashion shot. But that was the first one I posted, and of the two I took, it was the one that had a particular glint on the hanging golden skulls and the glowing snake eyes, because I shot using a Windlight setting for an SL day (not fixed day) and the sun was setting. That was the one, and did not even crop it or alter it in any way.

First, because it’s WINDLIGHT, and although the use of filters during shooting, and post-processing was allowed, I was pleased by that particular, ephemeral effect. Second, I could have cropped it but in the end decided against that and posted it unedited and uncropped. Apparently, my comment to that effect impressed the judges, according to what Johannes (and also Gabi) said. They were both VERY complimentary and I was blushing a lot. Yikes.

    Which makes THIS particularly funny:

Winner of Flickr Windlight photo contest and banned from Second Life Official Flickr group

I, uh, may have been a little too enthusiastic when posting public relations announcements as a favor for the St John sim owner, Gabrielle Riel. I sent an apology to the Second Life Official group admin but have yet to hear back.

Meanwhile the St John floats are rolling, although there were extremely frustrating tech problems at first. It didn’t help that there were a sim full of us listening to music and dancing while Gabi and Eve Whiterose sorted it out. Earlier in the day, she was forced to close the sim for a few hours while dealing with that and other stuff.

I took a lot of pictures at both Flickr and my SL profile. I also danced, and at one point may have accidentally clicked on something on my float that made it leap forward just as Gabi was working on fixing it. So I ran and hid under the cakes table.

Fortunately, I was very small. I stayed quiet and licked frosting off my paws when I thought nobody was looking.

    3 Little Mardi Gras Cheefs

Two other Dinkies kitties from St John showed up and D’OH, we all bought the same outfit; AlisonLockheart and cupcakesnatcher danced along with me. Later, I sent a snapshot to the maker of the outfit, Clover Dezno.

Then later, when all the floats were out and rolling, I spotted a new one that looked somewhat familiar.

    Tomb of the Wulfenbachs

Yes, it’s the Tomb of the Wulfenbachs, from my old Steelhead acquaintance Baron KlausWulfenbach Outlander. The detail on the top of his famous airship was remarkable. There are 3 dancing poses. It was nice seeing the Baron when he showed up later (which fortunately was after Edward Pearse left; they were wearing the same Baron Samedi outfit, which would have been awkwerrrrrd).

Anyway, when you look inside the tomb, you see an image of the Baron and Baronin. That tomb does get around – in fact, it’s driving itself around St John right now until Wednesday. The Baronin is wearing a snake instead of letting it crawl around on the ground as shown in my (modest cough) award-winning photo.

Which REALLY made me laugh, because on my float, I ALSO inserted myself into art.

Paul Cezanne picture Mardi Gras with Pierot, Harlequin, and a Dinkies Kitty

There’s a story behind this. A few weeks ago, I attended an art exhibition in Second Life, supporting a friend’s DJ set. It was in an historic roleplay sim popular with Europeans, full of beautiful buildings with elegant decor (and at least one very high-fashion attendee). The featured artist asked me if I liked any of her pieces, which were all pictures of her in costume using some other well-known artist’s work as a backdrop. I did like one in particular, and said so.

She said “Good. That will be $L400, please.”

It might have been more, I can’t remember.

Not wishing to look like a piker (and a culturally deficient American) in front of my friend, I paid up, and mentioned that I also made products with artistic textures (the mesh screens). I did like her work, you see, and it was not an exorbitant amount. It was just a strong-armory amount.

“Oh, show me one, I will put the texture for the art piece on it for you.” That seemed like a better deal, so at first I passed one to her that was mod, no transfer as they normally are. She liked what it did and I think she ended up buying more kits from the maker, but then she said “Pass me a mod one that I can transfer back to you.”

Okay, lady, here you go… and she passes it back to me with her art texture on it, and it’s no mod, no copy. My object is now no mod, no copy. I probably handed it to her as no copy to prevent it from getting out full perm and protect the original maker, so I’m hoist on an artistic petard of my own making, I guess.

What a good joke on somebody (probably me). So that’s why inserting myself into art at the last minute to decorate my rather dull float made me laugh, and the Baron’s tomb made me laugh, too.

  • Time Lord Walking Sticks – For Time Travelers And Country Gentlemen

Huzzah and such! A new product (actually, a pair of them):

Time Lord Walking Stick at Second Life Marketplace

Time Lord Walking Stick - Dark Ram's Horn

In honor of the newest Doctor, the walking stick of the First Doctor. This is a common country-gentleman style, so it’s not limited to SF roleplay.

via Second Life Marketplace – @DF@ Timelord Walking Stick – Light Ram's Horn.

I’m very happy to get this done, it’s been a hard slog of prim-twisting, image-wrangling, and animation-tweaking (not to mention script-monkeying).

Good Lord, is that the time? Doesn’t matter, just hop in the old TARDIS and arrive just in time for breakfast, well rested!

The sticks are in honor of The First Doctor, who carried a similar walking stick and apparently fended off something called the Zarbi with it.

This new Doctor Who feller may well end up with a cane, too, if his rabid fan based have anything to say about it. There might be bunnies.

  • How to: Photoshop Filters in The GIMP | Random Ramblings, Tip & Tricks

It is possible to get Photoshop filters up and running in The GIMP. It just requires a little legwork to set up. This has been tested to work on The GIMP 2.6.7, which is the latest release at the time of this post. I can’t comment or advise on any earlier version, but the good news is GIMP is freeeeeee, so upgrading won’t hurt your wallet.

via How to: Photoshop Filters in The GIMP | Random Ramblings, Tip & Tricks.

This is where I stopped for the night – after installing several new GIMP scripts, including one that was written as an alternative to the Flaming Pear Solidify script, which I downloaded but evidently won’t work in GIMP.

Some of the other Flaming Pear freebies do work, and the new scripts are AWESOME – a group of 2.8 compatible scripts from Gimphelp.org that include some nifty “stroke text” and “add arrow” functions that make something as tedious as outlining text slick and wonderful.

I still have to get something called “PSPI” installed and then I have to follow the instructions to attempt to get “Multi-Chan Hax” running, but using this alternative to Solidify, which seems to work (sort of).

Very, very slowly fooling with making clothing. I wore some tonight, anyway. It still needs work and I don’t know what I’m doing, yet.

  • Stick Needs Moar Werk

Time for boycat Dinkies and male Tinies to have a decent walking stick with simple animations – so I started to adapt the Ivory Walking Stick, which is old enough to need some freshening up.

I started by testing some nicer textures for the ivory, and setting it in a sort of cup-bezel with engraved silver fittings (I may play with materials a bit if they don’t add greatly to the land impact (LI). Then I resized it to the right length for a Dinkie or Tiny avatar, and got the pos/rot information with a script so as to update the control script. At last, I hopped smartly on to a pose stand to run it through the animations to test various positions and rotations.

    Suicide Kitty Cane

It appears to need a little more work.

In any case, it won’t take long to correct, I’ll have to adjust things to account for the portly/dumpy figure of the Dinkies mesh avatar. It will come with a simple top hat. The tailcoat is by Kaosome Hotshot, the AV is by Etheria Parrott, and already the Dinkies have a lively and fun community, though of course we boycats don’t have a lot of choices for outfits. I hope to do something to correct that.

My Mesh, Let Me Show You It
My Mesh, Let Me Show You It

Here I am sitting on my first (actually second) mesh object ever, which is more than a year old. Yes, it’s that damn Kipling Rock, which I now plan to fix up and put out as a fishing seat in the pond between my store and Dhughan’s Nature Reserve.

Now, finally, I can move on and make mesh stuffs, because at least I got this far in… ugh, almost TWO YEARS.

I’m wearing the test-texture version of my dumb party hat, which debuts tonight at Toot Toot’s.

Also wearing: my beautiful cinnamon sari by Luminous Designs. You can find it in a lot of beautiful colors at her shop in Steelhead St Helens

  • Finally, Something New For Men, Women, and Dinkies

Just listed at the Marketplace – as I thought, it took about as long to create the marketing textures as it did to create the original hat, although I spent a lot of time tweaking this one. It’s a unisex style again, and I’ve been wearing variations of this hat for MONTHS, so it’s high time I got it ready to release.

In the meantime, I discovered that it fits my new Dinkies Kitty avatar with a little rotating (no size adjustment necessary). Hurray, kitties in hats!
