Whoa! While browsing Rei’s site, stumbled on to this open-source tool. #SecondLife is moving to a PBR workflow “real soon now,” and the big content creators will have a painfully steep learning curve converting their products’ textures. This will help, expect SL to bury this info deep in the PBR wiki. aiaicapta.in/gltf-packer/

While doing homework for the coming #glTF workflow in #SecondLife I struggled with #channelpacking textures for manipulating how light reflects off of materials in a game engine. It’s easy in Photoshop, harder in GIMP. There used to be a plug-in for extracting different kinds of “maps” from images, but it was easy to screw up. The manual method is tedious; you can’t just plop a texture into an RGB channel, you have to make each greyscale. This open source tool might be helpful, and the aiaicapta.in is cited in the SL wiki as authoritative. The same site also has a…

As of right now, no SDKs (Senra development kits for the new starter avatars) have been distributed, according to Patch Linden. We anticipate the updated versions of the bodies and heads to be released within a few weeks. In the meantime, we still have all submitted applications saved on file, and new applicants are continued to be welcomed. When the dev kit is ready for distribution, we will release it in batches, beginning with our earliest applicants. – Senra Applications from Second Life Community Board Okay, then. I was wondering if my application was incomplete or messed up, as I…

Last week, I blogged about making my #SecondLife simpler, more organized, and spending more time in creative pursuits and less time on mindless virtual farming, tending, planting, harvesting, cooking…and so on. Over the last couple of weekends, and late into the night all this week, I went a little crazy with the “reorganizing” part and tore apart my virtual kitchen, which had been up in a skybox. I also reorganized my other Digital Farming System fields, animals, and tons of single-prim scripted sorting boxes. For some reason, I have this need to play with scripts that sort and then rezz…

The last time I made anything new or created something myself in #SecondLife was February 2019 for an inworld hunt I had participated in for years. Then I got sucked into the inworld farming game (DFS) and spent all my time feeding, tending, planting, cooking, and photographing products for selling in the DFS markets. I could go on about the mini-economy that Digital Farming Systems has become, but my personal experience is that it’s just taking up too much time and prim usage, and marketing the stuff is stressful and profitless for me. I’m literally distilling my unwanted inventory down…

There’s a lot going on in this story, and I’m playing around with some of it. And ZOMG, I’m committed to something! #OpenSim #SecondLife OpenSim land area continued to increase gaining a total of 3,400 standard region equivalents this month — after gaining more than 9,000 regions last month. The number of active users also increased by 1,300. Source: OpenSim land rally continues – I’m running one of these little mini-grids: These stats do not include most of the mini-grids running on the DreamWorld distribution of OpenSim, or private company or school grids. DreamWorld has counted more than 8,483 mini-grids…

Sansar has come a long way since we first caught wind of the project. In 2015, Linden Lab, the company behind the wildly successful Second Life virtual life simulator, saw the potential of virtual reality and set out to develop a successor to Second Life that would take advantage of modern graphics technology. Word is getting out to surprising places – Tom’s Hardware, sellers of high end graphics cards – stands to sell some upgrades to Sansar users. http://www.tomshardware.com/news/sansar-user-created-clothing-market,36138.html I got the email from Linden Labs announcing the extended free trial of Marvelous Designer for Sansar users. The new virtual…
