  • Watching The Thursday Night Show In #SecondLife Sort Of – @GentlemanRhymer set up next

So here I am inworld, trying to listen to a live webcast of Britain’s “The Thursday Night Show” which this week includes a live webcast from a club in Brighton, UK… and Mr B the Gentleman Rhymer is going to play at about 9pm-ish GMT (UK time).

    1-TheThursdayNightShowWithMrB

Unfortunately the inworld browser doesn’t care for the (very fun) Flash plugins for chat and images, so I have it up on Media on a Prim, sort of, but have to listen and watch on a “normal” browser.

Still, this Thursday Night Show thing is a lot of fun, very international, and normally it’s DJ’s from all over with very eclectic music. People log in and chat from all over the world. Meanwhile, they display art too – tonight’s artist is Rachel Polsom, with some nice character sketches. Also a few photos of Mr B himself just to tease. I was hoping for actual video, but it’s just going to be the live stream, and occasional photos and images.

In fact this popped up: I think it’s from within the venue, of the previous band, Dream Themes – who were a lot of fun with their TV theme quiz show act, and a stand in drummer.

    ThursdayNightDreamThemes

And now we’re all happily anticipating the amazing Mr. B, the Gentleman Rhymer. His banjolele is tuned up, his moustache is waxed, and our host, DJ Voice of Doom, is keeping the stream happy with a pretty eclectic mix of tunes while he sets up. I never knew that someone did a dance remix of “Let My People Go,” with Louis Armstrong, but it sounds pretty good. Same for cuts from Louis Prima and Scott Joplin – old jazz layered over club beats sounds… great, actually.

Meanwhile, I’m dancing with my steam-powered jetpack – because I can, you know.

    1-Dancing Jetpack

And at last, the headliner plays – great live set with audience participation. The live chat is just as fun, full of people from all over the world. There’s little red dots all over Europe, North and South America, and Down Under.

    Me, I’ll just keep dancing.

  • Drop Everything (Except Your Pants) And Watch The Chronicle of @Prof_Elemental

    Oh. My.

Professor Elemental has a new series of adventures (likely spelt and pronounced “adVENTCHAAAHS” ) that has, in the space of a few minutes, become my New Favorite Thing On The Interwebs. Now that The Guild has wrapped (perhaps forever) this will do nicely.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=leANn4T5bK8

Behold, the glorious first Chronicle of Professor Elemental – “Discovery.” It’s a thrilling tale of intrigue, mind-reading pith helmets, oozy schmoozing and aetheric communications with gorilla valets named Jeffrey via endless vats of tea.

Also, the mystery of the pronunciation of Jeffrey’s name is solved. So that’s sorted.

While the above is not my actual review of ‘Professor Elementals new album ‘Father of Invention’. It is how my review would look, if one were able, like on Facebook to change the language of this piece to the continuing adventures of a music loving, perhaps laudanum brandy crazed adventurer as he stumbles through Chap-Hop and the growing universe of Professor Elemental. A bit like how you can change your Facebook to be read in Pirate speak or in fact, donkey brays.

Since we last looked in, the man – the elevenses legend and after tea tall story; Professor Elemental, has been striding steam punk and Blackpool like some sort of mechanical colossus. From the coming crowdfunded web series ‘The Chronicles of Professor Elemental’ to his own comic. He has been making the world, a far better, nicer place actually. I, for one need this sort of stuff, or else days would disappear into a monotony of gin and passionless violence.

    Badger Faces.

There is no real reason for me to put that there or anywhere in any review – but as it occurs in the Professors album – there comes an infection to drop it into everyday conversation.

    Chocolate mole.

    There, he did it again.

via Big Rock Candy Mountain – Professor Elemental – Father of Invention Album Review

The video is really – dare I say it? a masterpiece, or at least it looks like it belongs on PBS’ “Masterpiece Theater,” as it’s shot in and around a National Trust stately home. This makes the interiors of the professor’s home (and the “museum?”) look gorgeous and posh. Also, there are musical interludes and some really beautiful, yet funny animations.

I’ve only watched it once. I’ll have to watch it again and again to catch all the funny little tics, gags, and bits. I’ve never seen a sedan chair used to such comedic effect before. Classic.

Professor Elemental remains a favorite in the Second Life Steamlands – a lot of social events are centered on music, either live, internet radio streams, or streams played by DJs, and music with a Steampunk element (heh) is popular. I wonder if he’s aware of the possibilities of Second Life machinima for future videos or chronicles? I’m sure there are builders and machinima artists who’d love the chance to work with him.

  • Second Life Christmas Expo – Music Today (all proceeds benefit Relay for Life)

I got a group message from one of my Steelhead compatriots, Fuzzball Ortega, that he had a DJ gig going on T1 Radio at the Second Life Christmas Expo until 11am SLT.

I had some time in the middle of the day, so off I went to check it out before having to get back to work:

    TUESDAY – 12/11 – All Today’s Music Sponsored by T1 Radio!
    9 – 11am: DJ Fuzzball Ortega of T1 Radio
11- 1 pm: DJ Mark Attenborough – the Voice of Second Life
    1 – 4pm: DJ Vic Mornington of T1 Radio
    5 – 7pm: T1Radio.. Rockin the 80s w/ Dee Wolfe

Via the Entertainment | SL’s Christmas Expo

It looks like another Steelheader, Victor1st Mornington, has a set later today, so I’ll listen via the T1 stream. There’s donation kiosks by the dance area, and also a vendor for the 40-track RFLSL Christmas CD.

I couldn’t do more than dance a little and drop some Lindens in the donation kiosk; I was in a tiny AV with a slightly balky Tiny AO that tends to stop and start every time I move the camera. I wonder… maybe it could go in the onboard AO set in Firestorm, but I don’t know if it’s possible. Besides which, my tiny dances are no-copy, so I don’t want to mess with them now that I’ve got the HUD set up. It’s just my old Wynx Siamese Kitty prim AV, which I have a lot of affection for (although I don’t wear it often enough).

As so often happens, a new person dropped in (the event may be listed in the Destination Guide, it’s hard to say) and of course it was the classic “just born today” interaction. He had no idea how to move, how to turn on the music stream so he could hear what we were listening to, no idea how to use the standard dance animations in his library inventory, and said “What is the point of this game?” and quit. He mentioned that he’d seen something on YouTube that made him want to try SL out.

We tried to interact with him – greeted him, asked him if he could hear the music, talk about the Relay for Life charity, but he couldn’t figure out how to do that, either. It’s all on account of the very poor job SL is doing of “orientation.” Also – it’s kind of hard to tell a new person how to find stuff in the official SL viewer when so many of us “oldbie” Residents use a third party viewer. So maybe that’s on us, too.

I’ll keep my stream on T1 for now while I work. It makes the time pass pleasantly.

  • Yet Another Streaming Radio App: TuneIn Is Pretty Awesome, Actually.

UPDATE: had to go hunt down a valid URL again for WXRT’s HD “New Music” stream to load into another Internet radio player. I don’t have TuneIn on my old laptop; for that I use Clementine, which is kind of twitchy but works on desktops like WinAmp did, but also scrobbles tracks via Last.fm or Audioscrobbler.

I went looking for yet another Internet radio app for the iPad, and had to track down the URLs again for one of my favorite stations:

    20121010-222456.jpg

For example, WXRT Chicago plays directly on a computer (without any login) using this link: http://www.thestreamcenter.com/STW.asp?URL=947 but I haven’t had the chance to check these links on my Roku lately… … Some have asked on this and other forums about the WXRT Chicago internet stream – but…it appears there are two streams, and only one plays on the ROKU.

The one people have been successful with is their “New Music Station” – which is a DIFFERENT station than what they play on the regular WXRT (it is a HD radio station). This is the URL for the New Music Station (edited because it’s changed again).

via Roku Forums • View topic – StreamTheWorld stations

Actually, there’s a couple more valid XRT streaming URLs. Even more info here.

    WXRT:  http://provisioning.streamtheworld.com/pls/WXRTFM.pls
    WXRT:  http://5483.live.streamtheworld.com:80/WXRTFMCMP3
    WXRT HD2 feed: http://provisioning.streamtheworld.com/pls/WXRTHD2DIALUP.pls

Some players work with different ways to access WXRT Chicago’s 2 feeds. I tried this latest app today because Radio Riel put all six of their streams on it: TuneIn.

This after painstakingly (or not so painstakingly) adding all my scattered, hard to find music URLs to Clementine (desktop and laptop) and failing to save them correctly. Up to now, Radio Riel has hosted their streams on several different sites, using different kinds of URLs, some of which didn’t work with inworld radio tuners (reminds me, need to get a copy of my working list out of Second Life and update it). Music is essential for me when building or sorting inworld, and of course any socializing I do is usually has music too. It’s also becoming essential during my RL workday, and while messing about with triangles in Patterns. So that’s why I keep on searching for the perfect music app.

TuneIn is a pleasure to configure. It has a TON of streams and it suggests other similar stations. Custom URLs can be added at the bottom of the favorites list. I even found podcasts galore, including some to do with Second Life (this one was blogged by Bryn Oh in 2010). Mostly I was tickled to find a bunch of public radio shows I don’t always catch when they’re originally broadcast, such as RadioLab or On the Media. There’s a lot of other content to explore; I even found a Sci Fi podcast from Krypton Radio, which is run by people from Second Life. Much music to Tune In to, so my workdays will be a lot more pleasant.

  • Time to #passthehat – a friend needs help

A friend needs a little help, so pass the pixel hat around. And try to make it to Mistletoe’s gig tomorrow! Link: RL Rears Its Ugly Head | Mistletoe Ethaniels Blog

I always liked that phrase. Such good imagery. ”Rears its ugly head” conjures up images of a sleeping monster suddenly awakened, and as soon as you see that head come up, oh kids you know you’re in for it. Well, the ugly head that RL has reared in our world is none other than The Big One itself. It’s not death that’s already happened, however; nor is it a death that’s preventable. It’s not a “matter of life and death”, no no, it’s a matter of just death.

  • Video: The New Boss Is a Spaceship (hey, that’s me way in the back)

Yep, if you watch closely as the camera swings around, I’m standing near the back with my friend Stranger Nightfire. Tags are left visible in this video so people can be identified.

I think this video was shot by the performer as he sang, so he was really multitasking!

  • It Takes Tuna To Tango

Last night’s Tunaverse Odd Ball was really nice; they had Jana Kyomoon DJing her own compositions. She was logged in from the UK (at THREE AM her time) for a 2 hour set and remarked that the sun was coming up as she wrapped up.

I was still having audio issues with the latest Imprudence build (sometimes it works, sometimes not) and after finishing up some more sorting (boring! Relaxing! Worth the effort!) I logged in under Viewer 2 (which has a newer version again).

I like Imprudence but do like some of V2’s features aside from a few niggling points (can’t figure out how to get multiple inventory windows open).

I hailed my Cafe Wellstone chum Nakaima Oh to get a landmark and showed up on the dancefloor as a little steampunk kitty, since I couldnt be bothered to change.

Nice music, nice conversation, took a lot of pictures and uploaded to Flickr. This one shows host/owners Tuna Oddfellow and Shava Nedra dancing while the pretty colors run down the drain behind them.

That’s me in the corner, losing my equilibrium.

At the end of the Odd Balls, they push the magic button and their store full of wild multicolored unisex clothes and hats rebuilds itself inside the psychedelic ballroom. I’ve never seen that before; it was impressive.

Lots more pictures up at my Flickr page

  • Economic Stimulus Needed In #SecondLife? Some musings.

News of yet another closure in Second Life, by way of NWN:

Molaskey’s Pub, a popular Second Life location for live music, is closing at the end of this month, unless a buyer steps in. This sad news comes from staff member Nasus Dumart Sue Martin Mahar IRL, who tells me despite having 1000 group members, and being listed on Linden Lab’s official Destination Guide, they’re unable to sustain it…

via New World Notes: Sim Deathwatch: Molaskey’s Pub, Popular Spot for Live SL Musicians, Closing This Month Unless a Buyer Steps In.

Despite a huge user group (more than 1000 members) Molaskey’s may close as a venue for live inworld entertainment unless someone steps forward and buys the place. Many people in Second Life have been complaining more and more loudly about the cost of “tier,” the monthly fee that Linden Labs assesses paid users when they take more than the “free” allotment of 512m of virtual land. People who are not paid users can “rent” land from owners if they pay their share of tier as a usage fee.

I can’t imagine owning or running a sim – I pay $25.00USD a month for the land I own, which is “group” owned, so my holdings include an extra 10% bonus land area. I also rent land in a privately owned sim (actually, a group of sims) and Dhughan rents his little railcar shop. These costs, to me, are affordable because they’re funded by a kind of micropayment incentive plan (my RL self is in a kind of sales-y field).

My friend Mistletoe is much more creative than I am, and can pay for her tier through the sales of her virtual victuals (Hey! there’s only one letter difference!). I’m selling a few items (and Dhughan is selling a few more) just by having them listed on SLM, though I know that I should be making more stuffs and doing more to promote them, having just attended a marketing class inworld on Monday similar to this one. The lack of spare time is a major factor; also a bloated inventory that makes it hard to find that texture or that prefab prim that I need to get something started.

I hope to find some more time to work on stuff rather than just moving it around in my inventory – Dhughan too.

In the meantime getting back to Mist’s post – she thinks using Second Life Marketplace to sell your product is still a good idea, and so did Kat Alderson the other night, despite the commission paid to Linden Labs. Mist was refuting this opinion from another marketer:

Now if one falsely assumes that LL’s new SLM (that just replaced Xstreet) is a well-run site with very few delivery problems and loaded with tons of advanced bells and whistles that make the life of Shopper & Merchant much better than Xstreet, then one can also initially believe that the 5% commission on all sold items is fair.

But, let us all remember one thing about LL’s SLM that is completely unique to almost any other online shopping sites (like eBay, Amazon, etc.) that are selling goods to shoppers. Regardless if you are buying a $0L freebie/demo item or a $50,000L castle the size of half your sim, the cost to LL to process and deliver the SLM product you bought is identical! There is absolutely no difference in shipping costs between a $0L 1-Prim BeachBall or a $50,000L 500-Prim castle – basically near-ZERO process/shipping cost!

So, if there is absolutely no difference in cost to process & deliver ANY sold item on SLM to your inventory, then why would the commission be percent based? Think about this for a second. You can make 100 SLM purchases for a $0L beachball freebie from one Merchant of which LL makes $0L in commission. Then you can make 1 purchase of a $50,000L castle from another Merchant and LL collects $2,500L – that is $2500L that this Merchant does not get. The 100 $0L purchases you made on SLM put much more burden on the site and the inworld environment and lag than the 1 purchase of the $50,000 castle, but they contributed $0L to operating the site.

It’s not about the difference in cost to process and delivery items, I think; it’s about making money, and Linden Labs owns the money-making machines and gets to set policy to suit themselves. We’re not talking about delivering books (as in Amazon) or T-Shirts (as in Cafepress), we’re talking virtual goods. Delivery costs aren’t the right commission-setting model for this kind of product, but value is; LL is just making the right business decision for themselves. They own the servers and they have costs: they must pay rent or mortgage on their office, pay utilities (power and water), pay salaries and insurance, pay for new technology, travel expenses, you name it.

Not that I don’t think they’re overcharging on some things – like tier. Once they’ve got servers up and running, with either regions or sims humming along nicely, their costs are pretty fixed. They really screwed a lot of people, including themselves, over the Openspace issue a few years ago. And these people remember, and expect that Linden Labs will pull another “oops, I did it again” move and mess with something that affects peoples’ tier costs or sales of their virtual goods.

As for Second Life Marketplace (which used to be Xstreet, before a major changeover that caused much gnashing of teeth) it continues to be a convenient and easy way to shop for “stuffs.” As everybody and their alt complains, “search is borked” and getting your sales items to show up in the comically underwhelming “inworld search” is definitely not fast, nor easy, nor nary a bit fun.

Kat Alderson’s marketing thing at Builder’s Brewery the other night, which I’ve been mulling over ever since, highlighted SLM as one of many very useful tools for selling pixel products. She had absolutely no problem with LL’s commissions, because like Mistletoe, she had concluded that her sales from SLM were a very large chunk of her total sales, and she made no mention of any big “delivery problems.” In my own, much more modest experience, I also get those emails from SLM (so does Dhughan) and I’ve never even seen a problem with something not being delivered (eventually).

Of course, if I’d worked really hard on a big architectural build that I dared ask $50,000 for, I’d grieve for that lost commission, but I sure wouldn’t refund a customer the net amount as suggested by Toysoldier – that’s just asking for trouble between seller and buyer. Better to lay out a really clear returns/refunds policy, and (as Kat suggested) make darn sure it’s given to the buyer before they click “pay.”

I recently shopped at an animation place that had a unique take on giving their “terms and conditions;” you had to sit on the product poster (it was displayed on an easel) and the EULA was displayed on your screen so that you had to accept it. The product in question was a “builder’s pack” with full perms, so of course the content creator was protecting the investment in their product (which was mostly the time spent animating, if you ask me).

It’s a shame about Molaskey’s that it’s closing,  and it’s a shame that the high costs associated with providing places like it will prevent more people from being content providers. Linden Labs should really take a look at the troubling trend of sim and venue closures and take steps to stem the tide by offering lower tier levels. Even a symbolic gesture might encourage more owners and creators to give it a try, or to keep on doing what they do best.

  • Fireworks, Music, Good Pub Craic

My friend Mistletoe Ethaniel runs the Wee Little Irish Pub in #Second Life and also does fireworks shows inworld.  Pictures  from opening night,  with Caoilte Skytower perfoming on a badass lute, and also some shots of her fireworks show for the opening of Godric’s Faire in a Harry Potter themed sim last April.

Drink up, little Steampunk-kitty, there’s lots more where that came from.

And to follow, here’s the pictures from the fireworks show – Mist plays music, you get to lie on picnic blankets so your screen is filled with the sky, and it’s just a really nice time. She’s available for fireworks gigs for openings, closings, and everything in between.

  • Skye Galaxy

I’ve been tinkering around with building stuffs and trying to figure out what I’d be interested in making, being, doing in Second Life (rather than continuing the highly scattershot and random existence I currently have) and also I’ve been keeping my eyes and ears open for inspiration.

Well, have a look and listen to this:

This kid is going places – it’s clear from his voice and piano playing that he’s going to be a major talent, maybe even break out of Second Life and into First Life. Yet the video appears at first to be amateurish screen-cap machinima – but watch and wait. It’s one take, no edits as far as I can tell, and after the camera finally finds the performer after following a few awkward dancing Lego men and seated avatars all using the same “sit-low-priority” animation, the camera pulls away and up, up, up. You’ll probably gasp at some point when you realize what locality the Second Life venue mimics – and it’s pretty impressive. At that point, I realized that the machinima director actually got exactly the shot (and feeling) that was needed for the song.

I’ll definitely have to look this Skye Galaxy up on Monday – that’s 8pm for me, so I should be able to catch the show. Maybe see you there?

    Monday 10/12

Skye galaxy 6PM – Skye Galaxy Live at Gwampa’s Dance Kamp

If you listen to live music in SL by now you have probably heard the buzz about Skye Galaxy. This young man has a voice that is impressive and a following that is growing by the day. He plays keyboard and guitar which you can sample here. If you can’t make this show, then do yourself a favor and make sure you catch him soon. Go early, Skye is filling sims. In Zeide Kamp.
